“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient” Rom 1:28
Paul gives us a warning in the Epistle to Romans. He speaks of a time, that will take place, where people will have a reprobate mind. Have you ever asked yourself, if we are living in such a time. Do the majority of people living today, have a reprobate mind. Are we having a reprobate mind. The following message, will take a look at what is a Reprobate mind.
Having a reprobate is refusing to consider God in one's choices. It is to know there is a God. To know that He exists. However, they just don't care. They have no desire, for Him. They do not worship him. They do not offer him thanks. He is the furthest thing from their thoughts. They simply, have no time for God. “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened” Rom 1:21
Having a reprobate mind is to worship creation over God. They don't worship the creator, they worship creation instead. They will even create idols and worship them. They will worship mother nature, animals such as a cow, or even an idol of a saint or biblical figure. Some will even worship money, their jobs, a celebrity, or another man or woman. If you are worshiping anything, other than God, you have a reprobate mind. “and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.” Rom 1:23
Having a reprobate mind starts off small. You don't wake up the next morning and decide to keep God out of your life and choices. You may even go to church. However, before you know it you “have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.” Romans 1:29 to 30
Having a reprobate mind is giving into sinful desires. It starts off small. It is giving into sinful desires a little at a time. It just no longer cares about what God has to say on a subject. We started having a reprobate mind since we have taken prayer out of school in 1962. At first we were loose, when it came to sex outside of marriage. We have seen an increase with babies out of wedlock. Even our teens are having babies, and most people think it is ok. “Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.” Rom 1:24
Having a reprobate mind is going against nature. At first we just get sexually active, but then all of a sudden things change. We start accepting sexual acts that are not even natural. We start having and accepting homosexuality as normal. When in reality, it goes against all nature. No other animal will have sexual behavior with the same sex. Only we do it. Sex was a means to reproduce. It was to be only between a married man and woman. We have changed that, and by doing that we have gone after something that is not even natural. This was the final step, that Romans chapter one speaks about, of a reprobate mind. “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.” Rom 1:26 and 27
Having a reprobate mind is to bring punishment upon ourselves. If you look at Rom 1:27 you will see that we receive the “due penalty for their error.” God does not have to punish us, we punish ourselves. We bring God's judgment on ourselves. Just think about it for a moment. Studies have shown that sex outside of marriage brings, unplanned pregnancy, transmitted disease, identity issues, depression and even broken relationships that can even end in divorce.
Having a reprobate mind will eventually lead to death. This death is not physical death, even though it can lead to that as well, it is talking about a spiritual death. It is to be separated from God for all eternity. It will keep you out of heaven. God is a holy God, and will not allow anyone who continues to rebel against him to enter heaven. In fact even if you don't personally do it, if you approve of others doing them, God holds you guilty. “Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.” Rom 1:32
The answer to having a reprobate mind is 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways. Then will I hear from heaven, I will forgive themselves, and I will heal their land.”
If you will like to ask God for forgiveness, and turn from your wicked ways, then say this prayer from your heart. Dear Jesus, I have sinned against you, forgive me. I believe you died on the cross for my sins and rose again. I surrender my life to you. Come into my life. In Jesus name I pray amen.
